I take a lot of pride in my shop. I'm a very small business, but I stay steadily busy creating things for you. Reintroducing Hannah's Toybox
I haven't blogged in forever... and it's time I re-start! I've made a bit of a commitment to myself to grow my business, and blogging regularly is part of that commitment. Where to begin? How about a bit about me?
I'm Erin. I'm a mom to two beautiful girls, Hannah and Rebecca, and wife to an amazing and supportive husband. I love creating things, and I love things that are eco-friendly. I don't see the point of not being easy on the earth if I don't have to. We grow our own vegetables at my house and while we don't grow enough to sustain our family, our garden does supplement our meals. We play with Legos and Lincoln Logs because my kid loves putting stuff together and I love the process of building. I've been sewing since I was about 6 years old, which is almost 30 years now. I'm largely self-taught: my mother (a professional seamstress turned homemaker with a home economics degree) taught me the basics, but in college I really started honing my skills. I've never taken a formal class, though I'd love to learn pattern drafting or advanced techniques from a master.
I love to create, so I've tried my hand at creating most things. I'm very good at sewing, but I'm not excellent at much else. I make my own soap and I can knit a scarf and hat, but I don't have the patience for purling so all my hats have rolled brims. I often bake my own bread, but I'm not a very accomplished baker and it often turns out in funny shapes that I don't intend. This past Tuesday we made our debut as a vendor! Hannah's Toybox was lucky enough to score a table at the San Mateo County Legal Secretaries' Association (SMCLSA) annual vendor dinner.
TK attended also, because who can resist the sweetest baby in the world?! We also wanted to show off our namesake. MIL helped out as well, and we are so thankful for her and appreciative of all her help.

TK did great and was only fussy once during the entire evening, when she got hungry and needed a bottle. She loved hanging out with Mama and helping to explain the benefits of handmade soap to the customers.
For those who don't know, handmade soap is not only beautiful, but it really is better for skin than commercial soap. That's because commercial cosmetics companies chemically remove glycerin from soap, a natural byproduct of the soapmaking process and a gentle humectant. They do this so they can resell the glycerin at a profit. Artisan soapers such as Hannah's Toybox don't have the ability (or desire) to remove such a beneficial component of soap. The moisturizing glycerin remains in the soap to soothe skin when cleansed.
Another reason handmade soap is so wonderful is because it is made in small batches by individuals, so artisan soapers such as us can control the ingredients that go into each batch. For example, here at Hannah's Toybox we make our soap in 12-bar batches, so we can splurge on high-quality ingredients such as goat's milk and calendula. These small batches and controlled ingredients also mean that if you desire a particular kind of soap or have a specific need, we can fulfill that need with a custom order. We're so excited about our new Go Green! line, we just had to come back and tell you more about it! We've added the second installment in our line, reusable wet produce bags. These bags are made from silicone-impregnated nylon, the same material that tents and rain gear are made from. Silicone-impregnated nylon is waterproof, strong, and very lightweight - each bag weighs a mere 5/8 ounces! Amazing.
These bags are great for your wet produce, like lettuce and carrots. Of course, you can use our original Go Green! produce bags for those items too, if you're not concerned about the moisture. Now you really don't have an excuse for bringing more plastic home from the grocery store.

This has been a year of firsts for our family - first baby especially, and all the "firsts" that come along with that. TK celebrated her first Halloween by being the cutest little pumpkin ever,

Go Green!
Hannah's Toybox is proud to kick off a new line, Go Green! Go Green! helps you cut down on waste in your everyday chores. The first product in our new line are our Go Green! reusable produce bags. We've long brought our canvas totes to the market like everyone else, in an effort to keep nasty plastic bags out of landfills and save trees. But then we got to the produce department, and tore bag after plastic bag off the roll simply to keep our apples and potatoes together in one place. We thought, doesn't that defeat the purpose of bringing our own reusable totes?
(The answer is yes, folks. YES, it does!)
Our reusable produce bags are made from unbleached muslin, sturdy enough to handle a load of onions, yet light enough not to tip the scale in the store's favor. Each bag weighs only 1.25 ounces! We've added a drawstring at the top of each bag, so you can cinch it up closed so you don't lose your oranges. Each bag is generously oversized - 15 inches long and 13 inches wide, with a 2-inch gusset at the bottom. In addition to being green, we think these are just plain nice bags.
Keep checking back with us for more on our Go Green! line. We have plans to add a water-resistant bag for wet produce, and a rinse-through mesh bag for things like beans and cherries. After we conquer your grocery bag, we'll move on to your lunch sack. Why do you keep spending money on zipper-top plastic bags when you could be using our reusable sandwich bags?

A bubbly good time
Handmade soaps are here! Erin began a bit of a love affair with handcrafted soap about ten years ago, when she was given a couple bars of goat's milk soap as a gift. Ever curious, she wondered how it was one went about making soap. Pioneers made soap two hundred years ago, without fancy manufacturing equipment. Now someone had made this beautiful soap in their kitchen. If they could do it, why couldn't she?
Sunshine soap is a perennial favorite. The scent is bright and mildly citrusy, and we stir in calendula petals for a burst of color.
Our beautifully handcrafted soaps and toiletries are the answer to this question. Handmade soap is naturally gentle and scents are mild as we do not use any chemical fixatives. We are proud to offer nine "regulars" in our soap line: Absolutely Allergic, Apricot Freesia Castile, Buttermilk Lavender Castile, Gentle Me, Lime & Clary Sage, Lemon Kitchen, Oatmeal Milk & Honey, Southern Summer Night, and Sunshine. Erin is always experimenting with new blends and playing with colors, so there will generally be a number of limited edition soaps offered as well. We can also custom-craft a soap for you, if you're looking for a particular scent or formulation that we don't generally carry. All our soaps are made with 100% vegetable oils; most are vegan, though we do sometimes use milk in our soaps.

Wet bags are here! We've been meaning to put up more kid stuff, and we finally have! Erin uses these lovely wet bags every day for TK's diapers, and even though TK is in cloth diapers, everyone needs wet bags.
Our wet bags are made from a sturdy, thick 2ml polyurethane laminate (PUL). They have a drawstring closure at the top and are trimmed with a cute acrylic bead. The fabric and findings are all sturdy enough to stand up to lots of washings, and they're a convenient 8x14-inch size - big enough to hold 2-3 diapers, but not so huge that it'll take over your diaper bag. And yes, we said washable!

We also added beautiful Hannukah dreidls backed with a pretty blue snowflake print. Of course, each of these prints is available individually in our cocktail napkins and dinner napkins to complete your holiday table.
When we mentioned kitchen linens, did you think of dishtowels? So do we! Keep your eyes peeled for our lovely dishtowels, which will of course be available in all our apron prints to coordinate with your other kitchen linens.
New prints are up over at Hannah's Toybox! We've added some beautiful, fun new prints to our kitchen linens line (aprons and potholders). There's a fun blue modern stars print, cute cherries on a pink background, and a gorgeous green-and-brown swirl. And how about this fabulous peach floral?

Just in time for Halloween!
Costumes will be going up later today! Currently we have kids' patterns for Dorothy (The Wizard of Oz), Snow White, and Belle (Beauty and the Beast). We also have a kids' pattern for Cinderella that could be made in any color for a princess, and for a renaissance maiden.
In adults' patterns, we currently have Robin Hood and Maid Marion, a flapper, and Greek/Roman togas for him and her.
Stay tuned for more patterns very soon! We're hoping to post photos soon of our kids' astronaut, explorer, fireman, and medical/veterinary scrubs. We'll also have costume accessories, such as capes for sorcerers, Red Riding Hood, and superheroes. We'll be adding more adult costumes as well very soon.
Currently costumes will not be located in the "Christmas Presents" (holiday) section. Instead, we're putting them in their own "Dress Up" category.

In the beginning, there was a blog
Welcome to Hannah's Toybox!
We're just getting started so don't be alarmed about the lack of posts here or the small-ish selection over here. There will be more, and soon! In the meantime, we are excited to have set up shop on Etsy. Like, ridiculously excited. Jumping-out-of-our-skins-with-excitement excited. Not even kidding.
We plan for this blog to be little "fireside chats" about new ideas we're kicking around and how our projects are coming along. You'll get to see our new projects first and from time to time we'll offer special savings on those new projects before we put them up for sale on the Etsy site. We'll also offer coupon codes and special freebies for our loyal readers, and maybe even a giveaway or two or six. Because really, who doesn't love a giveaway?
So, you're probably wondering who "we" are. We are Pam and Erin, mother and daughter, in that order. Pam has been sewing since she was a little girl, and Erin followed in her footsteps - so much so that she currently sews on the Elna that Pam was given as a high school graduation gift! Pam currently runs a preschool and just loves her kiddos there. Erin is married to The ED and Hannah (otherwise known as The Kiddo, or TK for short), our shop's namesake, was born just four months ago. We love love love to sew, love to create, love to make things from "nothing." Pam refers to fabric stores as her personal art gallery, and The ED teases Erin about "indoctrinating" TK early since she gets hauled around to fabric and craft stores with Mama all the time.
In the works at the shop: very very soon we'll be offering costumes! Just in time for Halloween, we know, but we'll be offering them all year long. Costumes are great for kids to role-play and learn in... they're not just for dress-up anymore. If you've already checked out the shop, you've probably seen our fun aprons and potholders. We'll be adding matching dishtowels soon, as well as coordinating table linens. We'll also do the reverse for the holiday table linens - put up the coordinating kitchen linens. In the meantime, if you see something you like but you want it just a little bit different (say, a different fabric), drop us a line at hannahstoybox (at) gmail (dot) com. We can certainly accomodate custom requests, and we love making one-of-a-kind items that will be sure to please you.
